The Cold That Warms the Heart: How to Ease Into Cold Exposure Gently and Safely
As the days grow colder, we usually tuck our swimsuits away at the bottom of the closet and wait for summer. But at PLOVE, we believe water has its own magic in every season. Cold-water immersion, or cold therapy, is a wonderful ritual that can wake up your body, clear your mind, strengthen your immune system, and give you an incredible boost of energy.
Whether you’re planning to try a cold shower at home for the first time or heading to an autumn pond or river with your friends, we’ve put together a few gentle tips to help you make friends with the cold—safely, joyfully, and without putting unnecessary pressure on yourself to perform.
Cold: a good servant, but a strict master
Cold-water immersion gives your body a small, controlled dose of cold stress. Your body responds by activating its natural thermoregulation mechanisms—in simple terms, it learns to manage heat more efficiently. But if cold-water immersion is to bring you joy and good health, you need to approach it with respect, as you would a medicine: getting the dosage right is essential. If you have an acute cold or the flu, or any ongoing heart or circulatory problems, it’s best to stay out of cold water and treat yourself to a warm bath instead.

How to start? Slowly, gently, and with your feet
You don’t have to start by cutting a hole in a frozen pond. The gentlest approach is to take small, gradual steps:
- Finish your morning shower with a cool rinse: At the end of your regular shower, turn the tap to cooler water. Start with your feet and hands, then gradually work your way up. Just 15 to 30 seconds is enough—studies show that even this brief exposure can do wonders for your body and refresh your mind.
- Consistency beats extremes: It’s better to take a mild cold shower three times a week than to work up the courage for an extreme plunge once a month. Your body will gradually get used to the cold and soon start treating it like a familiar friend
- Keep your breathing calm: The first touch of cold naturally makes us breathe quickly and shallowly. Try to slow down consciously, focusing on a smooth inhale and a long, deep exhale. Your breath is your greatest anchor.
A little tip: Cold-water immersion is ideal as a morning pick-me-up or an energy boost during the day. Before bed, on the other hand, treat yourself to a hot bath—the warm water will relax your body and help it naturally prepare for a good night’s sleep.

A waterside ritual: With friends and wrapped up warm
Taking a dip in a winter landscape has a truly unique magic. On the shore, you’ll find a sense of community, laughter, and support. If you’re heading outdoors, keep a few practical tips in mind:
- Don’t go alone: Your body reacts differently to cold water outdoors than it does to a shower at home. Having someone with you is essential for your safety and for sharing the joy.
- Warm layers for the shore: Get dry clothes, warm socks, and a hat ready beforehand, and wrap yourself in a practical, compact towel. Get dressed warmly as soon as you’ve dried off, and pour yourself a good cup of tea from your thermos.
- Listen to your body: Stay in the water only as long as it feels comfortable. As soon as you start losing feeling in your fingers or feel yourself shivering intensely, it’s time to get out. Cold-water immersion isn’t a competition.
Beauty in every seasonThe sight of a cloudy surface and the chill in the air might put you off at first, but the feeling you get when you step out of the water, dry off, and a warm wave of endorphins washes over you is priceless. And in the right swimsuit you’ll look amazing by the water, too—because swimsuits don’t belong only in suitcases bound for the seaside; they’re for every season when you feel at one with the water. Enjoy these moments, take some lovely photos to remember them by, and show your body a little care and love.
So, what do you say—will you join us and head to the water this winter? ✨
